Why Birth Time and Place Matter in BaZi

A birth date starts a reading, but a recorded time and birthplace help determine the birth instant and the hour pillar. They are especially useful near a date change or solar-term boundary.

Why does the hour matter?

BaZi arranges the birth moment into year, month, day and hour pillars. Without a recorded time, the hour pillar cannot be determined confidently. A time near midnight can also affect the day pillar, depending on the selected rollover convention.

Why does the birthplace matter?

Place identifies the relevant time zone and helps resolve historical clock rules. The same clock reading in two locations may represent different instants. These differences can matter when birth is close to Li Chun or another solar term.

Ming uses an IANA region time zone and checks historical offsets when a location is confirmed. If clocks repeated an hour, the calculator asks which occurrence applies; a nonexistent clock time needs correction rather than a silent guess.

What if my time is unknown?

Start with your date. Ming’s first look checks a range of possible instants, presents alternatives when a boundary is crossed, and does not assign a Moon or rising sign without both time and place. For a complete Four Pillars chart, use a recorded birth time and confirmed location. A certificate or family record may help, but do not treat an estimate as exact.

What about solar time?

Some BaZi schools use a solar-clock adjustment based on longitude and the equation of time. Ming offers recorded local civil time and an approximate apparent-solar option for the chart, plus a choice of midnight or 23:00 day rollover. State the convention when comparing charts: different choices can yield different pillars near a boundary.
